Apartment building collapses in Shanghai

This morning I saw some tweets about an apartment building in Shanghai that had collapsed, but only tonight I saw some pictures of what had happened. The building on Lianhua Road, just a few kilometers south of where I live (I go bike riding there sometimes), apparently just fell over!

It makes you wonder how safe other buildings in Shanghai are. Luckily there was only one casualty because the building was still under construction. If I would have bought an apartment in one of the other buildings I would seriously reconsider whether to move in or not!

  1. Hi Marc,

I've been lurking your blog for over 6 months now and I love it. This is the first time I've commented though.
When I read the title for the post I thought, like you, that it was just going to be a verticle collapse but that building is the most amazing fail I've seen in ages… I mean, how on earth did someone fail that badly? 0_o

    Keep up the awesome. 🙂

  2. Possibly the local talk of the weekend… have you seen what passes as "foundations" on that ?! Then again, the fact that it toppled over and remained so intact is ironically a testament to the "quality" of the upper floors' construction.. 😛 but seriously, this is a joke… a couple of recycled waterworks pipes holding it in place 10 cm deep in mud… how shoddy can it get ?!

  3. What an incredible set of pictures. The building seemingly unharmed by the collapse and still in 1 piece. Was the foundation not strong or deep enough, or was the ground on which it was build porous. At the current price per square meter I sure hope they come up with some good answers!

  4. hum, perhaps they should have used bigger poles and drive them in deeper.

I bet you some of the other flats will fall down too, if they don't fix this.

Better cycle in a big circle around this area…

    cheers,
